Red:
Brise de France Merlot 2009 - €6.41
Supple and round in the mouth, followed by the evolution of the rich and complex aromas of red fruits and spices. Another great value (and great tasting) red from the Languedoc.
Monestier Shiraz 2009 - €7.06
A lightly oaked Syrah/Shiraz from the Languedoc, made in a modern, almost 'New World' style. It has a lovely vanilla-like point from the oak, marrying beautifully with the soft dark fruit in the wine. A real crowd-pleaser.
Les Rocs Nobles Bordeaux 2007 - €8.56
Classic red Bordeaux, hard to fault. Blended from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it has typical notes of red peppers and tobacco.
Domaine Perillieres AOP
Cotes du RhoneVillages 2008 - €11.12
Made from 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache in the Gard region between Avignon and Nimes, this is surely a wine that encapsulates why the Rhone Valley is one of the best sources in the world of accessible, interesting, charming red wines. It's got body and substance, but it doesn't knock you off your perch. It's got sunshine and warmth, but it doesn't burn your mouth with an alcohol overload. It's got flavours of delicious dark candied fruits and sweet cinnamon spice, but it's no confected fruit juice. Very difficult indeed to resist finishing the bottle... Pair up with some lovely rosemary-scented lamb chops.
Domaine Aujoux – Fleurie 2009 - €16.98
Please, please, please do not associate all wines from Beaujolais with the nasty thin stuff they punt out in autumn as 'Beaujolais Nouveau'. If ever there was a marketing wheeze gone wrong, that was it. Proper Beaujolais is a beautiful, feminine wine and there are few more graceful parts of the region than the village of Fleurie and its wines. It's made with the Gamay grape (as with all Beaujolais), giving luscious, young berry fruit aromas and flavours. 2009 is the vintage they've all gone bonkers about in that part of the world. Try this and you'll see why. Utterly seductive wine.
Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2007 - €38.03
Domaine Giraud Tradition 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape
A lovely, opulent, well-rounded 2007 Châteauneuf made from 50% grenache. Full bodied and ripe tasting with soft tannins - rather like rich fruit cake with deep, complex aromas of spicy black cherry fruits.
Philippe Livera Clos Village
Gevrey Chambertin 2005 - €53.89
This Burgundian Pinot Noir (from 60+year old vines) has a deep purple hue and notes of boysenberries and liquorice on its aromatic nose. Notes of chocolate blend with cinnamon and black pepper on the spicy palate; complex, engaging and always seductive
Chateau Leoville Barton Saint-Julien
Grand Cru Classe 2002 - €133.95
The historic Bordeaux domain of Léoville Barton has produced some of the best wines in Bordeaux for the last 20 years. This great wine is a blend of cabernet-sauvignon, merlot and cabernet-franc grapes. One of the finest wines of the vintage, this dense purple-coloured 2004 reveals wonderfully sweet notes of charcoal, fresh mushrooms, smoke, earth, leather, cassis, and cedar. Full-bodied, highly extracted, broodingly backward, dense, and deep. The 2002 vintage has just received a score of 19.5 out of a maximum of 20 from the renowned “Revue des Vins de France” exactly the same grade as the Mouton-Rothschild 2005, Latour 2005 and Petrus 2005. It’s a fantastic wine which rubs shoulders with the big boys, without breaking the bank.
Vincent Girardin Clos de Vougeot
Grand Cru 2006 - €172.22
Scented aromas of black raspberry, rose petal, minerals, liquorice and blood orange. Racy and light on its feet; not a dense style of Clos Vougeot but quite refined and perfumed. Finishes with very suave tannins and subtle aromatic persistence.
Chateau Troplong Mondot Premiere Grand Cru Classe Saint-Emilion 1998 - €196.14
Intense aromas of ripe berries, tobacco and toasted oak with mineral. Full-bodied, with well-integrated, superfine tannins and a long, long finish. Extremely sexy, yet elegant.

White:
Domaine Saint Felix Sauvignon-Vermentino Cuvee Pierre Martin 2009/10 - €6.58
This blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Vermentino (a white grape grown widely in Mediterranean regions of France and Italy) is crisp, fresh and fruity, with lovely balance and character. It is made by Domaine les Yeuses, a family-run, 70-hectare estate close to the Bassin de Thau (famous for its oyster beds), south of Montpellier.
Domaine Bergon Chardonnay 2009 - €7.27
Lovely, smooth, fresh-tasting unoaked Chardonnay from this family-owned Domaine in the Languedoc. A bit of creaminess offers the perfect balance to the lemony, peachy fruit flavours.
Domaine des Lauriers
Picpoul de Pinet Prestige 2009 - €9.09
Picpoul de what, you might ask? Picpoul is a grape that grows close to the Med coast, south of Montpellier, next to the massive oyster beds they have down there. It's fab with seafood and this one has a touch more class and creaminess that lets it stand up to other dishes, too. Personally, I would neck the lot on the terrace with a few olives!
Andre et Michel Quenard
Chignin Vielles Vignes 2009 - €10.88
This wine is made with older vines of the widespread Jacquere grape, grown on the steep west and southwest-facing hillsides south of Chambery. The result is a fresh, charming, elegant wine - something to disprove most people's negative experiences of Savoyard wines. The appley/lemony flavours offer a perfect counter-balance to the acidity you need to cut through the robust local cuisine. It's relatively low in alcohol, too, so not too many headaches from this one...
Domaine Guenault AOP
Sauvignon de Touraine 2009 - €10.41
A bright and crisp Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley's famous Touraine region, with depth, elegance and a grassy, lemony, elderflower-like freshness. The grapes for this vibrant wine are drawn from some of the best vineyards situated on the hallowed tufa soils, contributing to its pure, mineral character. It can rightly be called a 'baby Sancerre'. Match it up with goat's cheese.
Croix de Montceau St Veran Terres Secretes 2008 - €15.67
The St Veran appellation is one of Southern Burgundy's finest, situated just to the west of Macon. The Chardonnay vines are planted on mostly hilly, chalky terrain, giving the wines a fine, minerally core. But its more southerly situation makes the wines riper, richer and rounder than white Burgundies from further north. This wine comes from vines planted in a small vineyard that is known as the 'Croix de Montceau'. It is luscious, opulent stuff, with rich, dense flavours overlapping on the palate. The mineral core is surrounded by a soft creaminess, allied to ripe flavours of peach, cooked pears and melon. A touch of oak knits everything together to produce a perfectly-balanced, glorious wine.
Domaine de la Rossignole Sancerre 2009 - €19.57
Lemony, citric aromas with bright fruit on the palate (peach, citrus, and even a hint of melon). The touch of grassy flavours and pure Sauvignon fruit will give you a great idea of what the Sancerre appellation is all about.
Domaine des Deux Roches – Pouilly Fuissé Vielles Vignes 2007 - €28.23
There's a lot of elegance in this wine, made by Domaine des Deux Roches, one of Southern Burgundy's star names. The nose expresses a mineral complexity and beautiful fruits. The mouth is well balanced, structured and round with generosity. The Chardonnay vines are between 60 and 90 years old and face south-east
Domaine de Bois d’Yver – Chablis Premier Cru 2008
(Organic) - €29.18
A delicious, dry, well-balanced wine with flinty aromas from superior Premier Cru vineyards in Chablis. Refreshing acidity with green apple, pear and melon fruit flavours and a lovely clean, crisp finish.
Vincent Girardin Meursault Premier Cru Les Charmes 2001 - €80.61
When you hear people talk dreamily of their love of great Burgundy wine, this is the sort of thing they are talking about. With nearly 10 years under its belt, it is in fabulous shape right now. It still retains a fresh mineral streak, cut right through the middle of the wine. But that is enveloped in all manner of rich, wonderful flavours - nutty, creamy, buttery. Truly delicious stuff. |

Champagne
Joseph Perrier Cuvee Royale Brut NV - €45.33
Few can resist the softness of the fruit flavours and the length on the palate of this Champagne, which is made by a small, family-owned Champagne house. Best served as an aperitif, it is also excellent with seafood and smoked salmon.
Billecart-Salmon Brut Champagne NV - €57.41
One of the wine trade's best kept secrets, Billecart-Salmon is a small, family-owned house responsible for some of the finest bottles of Champagne ever to see the light of day. The non vintage is the sensational entry point to its range - a bit of Billy NV makes any celebration go with a bang.
Laurent Perrier Champagne NV - €62.19
This is an immensely popular Chardonnay-dominated Non-Vintage Champagne with resulting lightness and elegant depth and richness. It's divine. Fresh, delicate citrus and white fruit aromas are followed by an elegant, yeasty, fruity palate with balanced crisp acidity.
Dom Perignon, Champagne - 2000 - €243.98
This famous Champagne is blended from 55% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot Noir. Look for acacia honey and fresh almonds on the nose, while dried apricots and toasted brioche combine on the long finish.
Joseph Perrier, Rose Champagne - €59.80
Delicate and finely tuned, the elegant Joseph Perrier Champagne Rose exhibits fresh strawberry and raspberries on the nose. Delicious red fruit puree and cream show on the palate, with a crisp acidity and lovely balance.
Billecart Salmon, Brut Rose Champagne - €86.11
From this highly acclaimed House, a delightful, sexy rose with a charming fruity nose and palate with hints of roasted nuts. Its pale pink colour is adorned with warm glints of gold, and its delicate, slowly rising bubbles give it a persistent mousse. |
